Autopsy: Toddler found in septic tank died of accidental drowning

LAKEWOOD - An autopsy has shown that a 2-year-old girl whose body was found inside a septic tank behind a Lakewood home died of accidental drowning.

Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford said yesterday a preliminary investigation found "no indication of foul play or trauma."

The prosecutor's office said police were dispatched to the East Spruce Street home at around 5 p.m. Monday after being contacted by Marina Matias, who reported that she could not find her 2-year-old daughter. She had been playing in the yard with four siblings.

Search teams found a 3-foot-wide hole in the yard that led to a septic tank. The child's body was found inside the tank around 7:30 p.m. after the water was pumped out.
