Authorities: Police shoot, kill man in northern New Jersey (6/4/15)

BYRAM - The Sussex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating after a police officer fatally shot a man on Laurel Trail in Byram Township Wednesday afternoon.

According to the prosecutor, Byram police took a 911 call from a neighbor who said they heard gunshots coming from the home. Six officers from Byram and two from the Andover Police Department responded to 19 Laurel Trail.

The resident of the home, Ronald Neal, came outside and confronted the officers. He was armed with a pistol and a shotgun and repeatedly told the officers to shoot him, according to the prosecutor.

Neal then supposedly tossed away the handgun and told officers it was not loaded. However, he then pointed the shotgun at the officers and said that it was loaded. One of the officers then shot Neal one time in the torso.

He was taken to Hackettstown Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The officers were also taken to the hospital to be treated for trauma.

The New Jersey State Police Crime Scene Unit is assisting in the investigation.
