BERGENFIELD - Investigators are still trying to determine what caused a fire that killed a Bergenfield man and injured his elderly mother.

The four-alarm fire began just after 7:30 a.m. Sunday in the Luke Avenue home. Fire crews from 11 towns responded to the scene.

The body of James Taylor, 59, was found inside. His 91-year-old mother, Frances Taylor, was rescued and taken to Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck.

At one point, as firefighters battled the blaze, a bomb squad had to be called when authorities discovered gunpowder, shotguns and explosives in the basement.

Neighbors describe the Taylors as a nice family who kept to themselves.

Officials do not believe there is any connection between the explosives and the fire at this time.
