IRVINGTON - At least two people were injured when the driver of a large sedan lost control of his car and drove straight into a Pathmark storefront in Irvington, officials say.

Mayor Wayne Smith says investigators believe the man possibly suffered a heart attack or some other medical emergency before crashing into the building on Lyons Avenue at around 1:45 p.m. Friday.

At least two employees inside the store suffered minor injuries, according to emergency crews.

Shoppers outside the store were relieved. "I was right there a minute before it happened, now that I think about it," says James O'Loughlin.

The driver was taken to an area hospital in an unknown condition.

Shoppers continued to make their way to the store despite officially closing after the incident.

A wrecker was brought to the scene to remove the vehicle from the building.

Repairs to the storefront have already begun. There is no word yet on when it will reopen.
