ASBURY PARK - The flag outside Asbury Park High School is flying at half-staff today as students and fellow teachers mourn a beloved teacher and football coach who was hit and killed by a car on the Garden State Parkway.

John Key, 37, was struck by a car after getting into an accident on the parkway in Wall. He was crossing four lanes of traffic, returning to his car after checking on the passengers in the other car.

The Asbury Middle School teacher was also an assistant coach for the high school's varsity football team. His players say losing him is a shock, especially since they had just been celebrating their win over Keyport hours before.

Mark Gerbino, the high school's principal, praised Key for the strong influence he had on his students and players, calling him "amazing." Key, who used to coach in Ocean and at Monmouth Regional, is survived by two children.
