ASBURY PARK - The first same-sex marriage license application in Asbury Park, where there is a large gay community, was issued this morning just after 8 a.m.

Despite an order from the Health Department telling New Jersey cities to hold off issuing same-sex marriage licenses, the town started issuing applications.

The New Jersey Supreme Court has denied a request from Gov. Chris Christie to delay the marriages, slated to begin at 12:01 a.m. Monday.

There is a 72-hour waiting period for a marriage license in New Jersey, but by having the application, same-sex couples will be able to get married on Monday. Asbury Park is among a handful of cities that made the decision to accept the applications Friday.

It's a dream come true for Dan Baum and Steven Brunner, who just applied for a marriage license in Asbury Park.

"We've been waiting for it," Baum says. "We could have gotten married in New Hampshire, New York, other states but we met here, we did a civil union here, we live here and so now we're doing it."

Newark Mayor Cory Booker says he'll also start issuing marriages at 12:01 a.m., as will Lambertville Mayor David Delvecchio.
