ASBURY PARK - Asbury Park firefighters are calling the boardwalk their new home this summer.

The firefighters are not lifeguards but are EMTs who are trained to perform water rescues. Local safety officials say they are now dispatching firefighters to the beach to keep an eye on swimmers who stay in the water even after the lifeguards go home.

Officials say the strategy has already proved itself. After lifeguards left for the night Monday, firefighters were able to rescue one child while a police officer saved another.
