Arrests being made in Newark following attack

NEWARK - Following an attack outside of a bodega after-school that was caught on surveillance video, the director of security of Newark Public Schools tells News 12 New Jersey that the attack was far from an isolated incident. Police say a minor who is believed to be the leader of the attack is in custody.

The security director says school officials are working with police to beef up security at dismissal time so students can leave without fear of being jumped.

Witnesses say the assault was one of several committed by a group of 20-30 teenagers.

Because this is an issue of student safety, a school district spokesman says they're actively cooperating with Newark police. The security director says more students could be suspended or expelled.
