Army Ranger from NJ killed in Afghanistan

PITMAN - (AP) - Family members say they've been notifiedthat a U.S. Army Ranger from southern New Jersey has been killed inaction in Afghanistan.

Dianne Hammond, the mother of 28-year-old Sgt. AlessandroPlutino, of Pitman, told the Gloucester County Times that she was notified that her son waskilled Monday by enemy gunfire. Hammond said the family last talkedto their son when he called to reassure them he hadn't beeninvolved in the helicopter crash that killed 30 U.S. troops onSaturday.

Plutino was a rifle team leader in B Company, 1st Battalion,75th Ranger Regiment. He was on his third tour in Afghanistan.

Plutino was a 2001 graduate of Pitman High School, where heplayed football and wrestled.

He joined the Army after graduation from Wilkes University inWilkes-Barre, Pa.
