TOTOWA - Totowa is the latest New Jersey school district to bring armed police officers to area schools in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting tragedy.
Two armed officers are now placed at the Washington Park School, which houses grades 3 through 8. Another officer has been placed at the Memorial School with students from pre-k through second grade.
Totowa is also stepping up security measures for school visitors. Guests must be buzzed in and must provide identification to the officers. The armed officers will then scan all visitors with metal detectors.
The officers will cost the district about $190,000 per year.
Totowa is looking into additional safety measures, like bullet-proof glass and bars on the windows.
