PATERSON - Police are looking for the person who shot and killed a dog in the backyard of a Paterson home.

Authorities say the 2-year-old pit bull wasn't hurting or threatening anyone when someone came into the yard on 12th Avenue Tuesday evening and shot him at point blank range.

The dog was shot in the head, animal control officers say, and still alive when they arrived. The dog had to be euthanized a short time later.

John DeCando with Paterson Animal Control can't understand what would have motivated the shooter. "The person who must have done it must have been a cowardly person because the dog was tied up. He wasn't even chasing someone," DeCando says.

DeCando believes the dog could have been barking.

The house is abandoned, but someone was taking care of the dog. He had plenty of food and water next to him.

An animal rights group is now offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.
