HASBROUCK HEIGHTS - Authorities say a man in his 80s fatally shot his wife and brother-in-law before turning the gun on himself.

Officials say it's not clear what sparked the shootings, which occurred early Wednesday at two homes in Hasbrouck Heights.

Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli says Angelo Talignani went to Anthony Gentile's Burr Place home around 7:30 a.m., took one of two guns legally owned by Gentile, and shot him in his bedroom.

Talignani then went back to his home, also on Burr Place, and shot his wife, Antoinette, while she was lying in bed. Talignani then shot and killed himself.

A home health aide, who lives with the Talignanis, heard the shots and called police from a neighbor's home. All three people killed were in their 80s.

"I am told these were all longtime residents of Hasbrouck Heights," says Molinelli. "Good families. You never really know why people do this. And I really can't speak to any possible motive."

The circumstances surrounding the deaths remain under investigation.

A friend, Salvatore Altomare, says he knew both men from the local VFW. He says Talignani and Gentile were both Korean War veterans.

"They got along like brothers," Altomare says. "I can't imagine them going out like this. They got along very well."

Authorities say Talignani had struggled with depression, but they're not sure if that played a role.
