TRENTON - New Jersey lawmakers have passed a bill that would outlaw ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.

The state Senate voted 22-17 on Monday to pass the bill.

Another version cleared the Assembly in March. But it will take a new vote in that chamber to send it to Gov. Chris Christie.

The governor signed many of the firearms bills into law last year. But he issued conditional vetoes of some of the more contentious ones, including a ban on .50-caliber rifles.

Gun rights supporters say it would make it harder for citizens to protect themselves and could have the effect or banning certain guns.

Advocates say the limit on the capacity for ammunition magazines could make mass shootings less deadly.
