Alternative school has no homework, tests

The New School of Monmouth County in Holmdel doesn't assign homework or tests, but even without the traditional workload, plenty of learning is taking place

HOLMDEL - The New School of Monmouth County in Holmdel doesn't assign homework or tests, but even without the traditional workload, plenty of learning is taking place at the school.

Susan Chilvers started the school more than 40 years ago with the idea that tapping into a child's natural curiosity builds confidence and a love of learning. There are only about 50 students enrolled in the school each year, with about 15-18 students in a classroom. There are only three classes in the school, one for 5 to 8-year-olds, one for 8 to 11-year-olds and the last for 11 to 14-year-olds.

Once students graduate, they move onto a more traditional high school. The school is a non-profit private school, with tuition of about $11,000 a year.
