LEBANON - The New Jersey State Police helicopters recently attracted national attention because of Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.)'s ride to and from his son's baseball game. As it turns out, the choppers are used for far more than transportation.

News 12 New Jersey got an exclusive look at the training needed to fly some dangerous missions. The training focused on assisting divers as they practiced water rescues at the Round Valley Reservoir.

State police say they've been involved in rescues from cliffs and that a 10-year-old child was rescued from a cliff near the Delaware water gap.

Lt. Paul Approvato heads the state police aviation unit and says transporting the governor makes up a tiny fraction of what they normally do. He says much of their time is spent training.
