JERSEY CITY - The 9/11 U.S. Honor Flag arrived at Newark Liberty International Airport today and will be used at the funeral for Jersey City Police Officer Melvin Santiago.

The flag, which first flew over Ground Zero on Sept. 11, is used at funerals for police officers and soldiers.

The flag “is symbolic of freedom,” says Jersey City Police Captain Michael Kelly. “PO Melvin Santiago stood for freedom, especially on the night he was murdered.”

An honor guard flew the flag from Fort Worth, Texas into Newark.  It was presented to the Jersey City Police Department, which then passed it on to the officer's grieving family - including his mother and 13-year-old brother.

Members of the National Coalition of Hispanic Officers were the ones who originally requested the flag to honor Officer Santiago.  It will stay with him and will be placed on his casket until he is buried.
