PASSAIC - An 82-year-old Passaic woman was attacked by a pit bull this afternoon, receiving severe injuries to her leg and arm.

Witnesses say the woman was in her Ninth Street backyard when the female dog belonging to a next-door neighbor jumped a fence and mauled her.

The victim was able to free herself from the dog, but witnesses say her left arm and right leg had gaping wounds.

Police are investigating reports that the pit bull has attacked before, but many neighbors say the dog, and a second pit bull that lives in the home, have never gotten loose.

Animal control has quarantined the dog at the Passaic Animal Shelter for 10 days and are questioning the dog's owner.
