8-year-old Union boy dies from suspected meningitis

UNION TOWNSHIP - Health officials believe that bacterial meningitis is responsible for the death of an 8-year-old in Hunterdon County.

The boy was in second grade at Union Township Elementary School. The Hunterdon County Health Department says the boy died early yesterday morning.

School officials say custodians at the small school have sanitized every doorknob, desk top and other surface to try to prevent the spread of the bacteria.

It's at least the second meningitis death this year of a New Jersey student. Last month, 17-year-old Chris Dhume, of Aberdeen, died from the bacterial infection.
