79-year-old barber attacked in Bloomingdale

BLOOMINGDALE - A Passaic County community is in shock after 79-year-old barber Frank Halat was beaten and left for dead in his own Bloomingdale shop.

Bloomingdale police are combing the area near the barbershop located at 57 Main St. and reaching out to the public in search of clues.

News 12 New Jersey spoke with people in Bloomingdale who called Halat an "icon in the community." Halat has worked at the barbershop for nearly four decades.

The front of the barbershop has become a memorial, with crosses hanging as well as flowers and pictures drawn by children.

Local shop owners say they have changed the way they do business and that doors will be locked and cameras will soon line the streets.

Bloomingdale police are asking anyone with information to call them at 973-838-0158
