5 people shot, 2 killed on Newark street

NEWARK - The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating a shooting in Newark that killed at least two people.

Officers responded to the scene in the area of 18th Avenue and Livingston Street just after 6:30 p.m. Friday. One person was pronounced dead on the scene, and another at University Hospital.

Family members identified Clifton Purkett as one of the victims.

Witnesses told News 12 New Jersey that there have been multiple shootings in the same area this week.

Police say a vehicle that may have been involved with the incident was found burned.

The injured were also taken to University Hospital.
