RIVERDALE - An out-of-control dump truck stalled the morning commute for many in northern New Jersey today.

Riverdale police say a dump truck driver lost control of his vehicle and struck eight cars on Route 23. The driver was heading southbound when, according to police, he said his brakes failed.

Police say five people were injured after the truck overturned and struck the cars. They were taken to a nearby hospital with minor head and neck injuries.

Route 23 was shut down for several hours while crews worked to clear the crash. Many nearby roads were also congested due to detour volume.
