WESTFIELD - A fire tore through a strip mall in Westfield Monday, destroying five of the eight businesses.

Firefighters say they arrived to find flames coming from the back of the Karate N Motion karate studio and thick smoke billowing out of a nail salon and cleaners on either side. The fire was so intense, nearly half of the roof of the strip mall caved in.

Hassan Diwane, owner of La Casa Pizza, says his business was saved thanks to a fire wall that was installed more than 20 years ago. Diwane says he feels awful for the people who lost their businesses, especially the nail salon that had opened only a year ago.

All the businesses were closed because of Labor Day and no one was inside at the time. Six firefighters were treated at the scene for heat exhaustion.
