PERTH AMBOY - All 12 residences were claimed by an early morning fire inside of a Perth Amboy apartment complex leaving 43 residents homeless.

The fire broke out at about 4:15 a.m. inside 485 State St. Fire officials believe the fire started in a kitchen area on the second floor.

Dozens of firefighters from several towns brought the fire under control in about three hours.

Several other residents in adjacent buildings were also evacuated.

No one was seriously injured in the blaze.

The 43 residents of the building are staying at a nearby community center that has been converted into a shelter.

Fire officials say the building will have to be demolished due to excessive damage.
