AVENEL - Four pregnant women were injured Monday in an afternoon fire at an Avenel business.

At least six fire trucks were called to the scene after a building belonging to National Fence Systems caught fire around lunchtime.

The women were taken to a hospital with symptoms of smoke inhalation.

The southbound lanes of Route 1 and 9 were brought to a standstill while crews fought the fire. The lanes began to reopen at 4 p.m.

There is no word yet on the cause of the fire.
