NEWARK - Firefighters have gained the upper hand of a stubborn four-alarm warehouse fire in Newark.

The fire broke out just after midnight Tuesday at the Kearny Steel Container facility on South Street in the city's Ironbound section.

Fire officials say it took approximately 100 firefighters from the city and neighboring towns more than three hours to bring the fire under control.

According to the company’s website, the facility cleans and stores plastic and steel containers.

“The men and women of the Newark Fire Department did an exceptional job keeping the fire from spreading to nearby commercial businesses,” Acting Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose says.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Newark Arson Unit, according to Ambrose.

The blaze comes after a fire tore through an abandoned rooming house on Cypress Street Monday. Firefighters are checking the debris for any human remains, and the cause is under investigation.
