4-alarm fire rips through Elizabeth home, business

A quick-moving four-alarm fire tore through a building in Elizabeth overnight. Firefighters were called to the 200 block of Catherine Street at around 9 p.m.

ELIZABETH - A quick-moving four-alarm fire tore through a building in Elizabeth overnight.

Firefighters were called to the 200 block of Catherine Street at around 9 p.m. last night. The structure houses a business on the ground floor and apartments above. Fire officials say they believe the fire began in the basement and spread upward.

Elizabeth Fire Chief Tom McNamara told News 12 New Jersey four firefighters briefly became trapped while fighting the fire. Two were removed using ladders, while the other two were able to escape on their own. Two firefighters suffered minor burns.

Officials have not said how many people were living inside the home. Several nearby buildings have been evacuated as a precaution.
