3-year-old girl dies in Newark fire, 5-year-old critical

NEWARK - Officials say a 3-year-old girl died and a 5-year-old boy was critically injured in an overnight house fire in Newark.

The children were on the second floor of a three-story home on the 200 block of North 6th Street. The fire broke out just after midnight. Fire officials say the fire began in the living room of the second-floor apartment and spread so fast that it trapped nearly everyone on the upper floors.

Witnesses say neighbors attempted to scale the side of the home in an effort to rescue the trapped children. Newark Fire Department officials say seven others were taken to University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The 5-year-old was flown by helicopter to the St. Barnabas Medical Center. He is now listed in critical condition.

Approximately 50 firefighters were called in to help fight the fire.
