EAST ORANGE - A 3-year-old girl from East Orange was rushed to the hospital Saturday morning after she was attacked by a family member’s dog.

Janaya Everett was bitten by the pit bull-hound mix in an upstairs bedroom of a house on North Maple Avenue.

Owner Dwayne Harper says there were two dogs in the house at the time and the dogs had never been around children, which may have made them uncomfortable.

The dog's owner says the little girl was being watched by her grandmother at the time.

Family says the child was bitten on the scalp and also suffered scratches to her leg.

She was taken to a hospital and sent to surgery. Her injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Animal Control took possession of both dogs. Harper says he's been told by the city that both dogs will be put down.
