MATAWAN - Three people were rescued by firefighters from a three-alarm fire in Matawan early this morning.

The fire broke out at around 4:30 a.m. near the intersection of Church and Broad streets. Matawan Fire Chief Tim Clifton tells News 12 New Jersey that firefighters found two occupants inside trying to evacuate an 87-year-old wheelchair-bound woman.

All three people were safely evacuated by firefighters. However, firefighters were not able to stop the fire in time to save the house.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
