3-hour standoff in Wayne comes to peaceful end

WAYNE - A three-hour armed standoff between a Wayne homeowner and the Passaic County Sheriff's Office has come to a peaceful end.

The confrontation began when the officials showed up to evict 53-year-old Basil Stephanatos for allegedly not paying his taxes. Authorities say he then pointed a shotgun at two sheriff's officers.

Investigators say Stephanatos had refused to pay part of his property taxes for the past seven years. He was talked down after three hours of negotiations.
