ELIZABETH - Firefighters have knocked down a three-alarm fire in Elizabeth where three of their own were injured, and a neighbor risked his own life to save a woman trapped in the building.

The fire at the corner of Third Avenue and John Street was reported just after 4 p.m. It is believed to have started on the second floor, and quickly spread to the third floor.

Neighbor Jose Sanchez says he fought his own fear and heavy smoke to rescue a woman from the building. "I kicked the other door down and a lady was on the floor, coughing, so I helped her down," he says

The woman was taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries.

Three firefighters, one with a broken ankle, were also taken to the hospital. Officials say none of their injuries are life-threatening.

The Red Cross is assisting three families with lodging, food, and clothing.

Firefighters have not released any information on the cause of the fire.
