SOUTH BRUNSWICK - Three people, including two teens, were critically injured after a crash on Route 1 in South Brunswick.

The crash happened just after 5 a.m. near Deans Lane. According to police, the teens were among five people inside a Nissan Sentra.

Police believe the driver of the Sentra was distracted by a cellphone and ran a red light. A Nissan Quest minivan then crashed into the Sentra.

All five of the people inside the Sentra and three people inside the minivan were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries.

A 13-year-old, 15-year-old and 21-year-old, all passengers inside the Sentra, were critically injured.

The highway was closed for six hours as police investigated the crash.
