PATERSON - A fire tore the roof off of a vacant apartment building in Paterson Thursday afternoon.

Fire crews spent hours shooting water all over the top of the building on Godwin Avenue. Major operations have since ceased, but the chance of sporadic flare ups has emergency crews keeping an eye on the building overnight.

Smoke from the three-alarm fire could be seen from miles away.

Paterson Mayor Jeffery Jones, who was on the scene of the fire, says inspectors will determine whether the building needs to be demolished.

Investigators are working to determine how the fire began.
