LAKEWOOD - About 200 school bus drivers worked today so that Orthodox Jewish students in Lakewood could attend private school.
Some 400 drivers usually handle 18,000 students in Lakewood. But officials reached a compromise after some drivers complained about having to work on Thanksgiving to fulfill a state mandate to provide busing.
Parents carpooled on the holiday in the past. However, officials say that's no longer practical because the number of students has grown.
As a thank you, the Lakewood Board of Education bought pumpkin pies for the drivers.
