BRANCHBURG - A 20-year-old man is being held on $2 million bail for allegedly killing two elderly people in Branchburg.
Ezra Simon-Daniels dialed 911 from a Wal-Mart parking lot in Whitehouse shortly before 6 a.m. Saturday and was "distraught," according to the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office. Police met him at the parking lot and found him sitting in the drivers seat of a car. Prosecutors say Simon-Daniels was covered in blood, but did not have any visible wounds.
Police then conducted a welfare check at Simon-Daniels' home. Officers say they entered after knocking several times without response, and inside they found the bodies of an elderly man and woman.
Both victims had significant blunt force trauma to their heads. Investigators believe they were lying in bed when they were attacked, and officials say that the suspected murder weapon, an aluminum baseball bat, was located inside the house.
Authorities have not released the victims' identities. Autopsies are being conducted to confirm the victims' identities and cause of death, officials say.
Simon-Daniels is being charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He was ordered held on $2 million bail.
