LAKEWOOD - Authorities say the body of a missing 2-year-old girl was found inside a Lakewood septic tank this evening.

First responders had been searching for the child since 4:30 p.m. this afternoon, when the child was first reported missing. The toddler had gone missing from her home on East Spruce Street near New Hampshire Avenue.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office released a statement regarding the incident that said police were contacted by Marina Matias, who said that she could not find her 2-year-old child, "J.C." The prosecutor says police and emergency personnel were immediately dispatched.

Authorities say the child had been playing in the yard with her four siblings when she apparently fell down the hole into the septic tank. A medical examiner is currently on the scene in order to make a positive identification of the child.

The investigation into the child's death will be conducted by the prosecutor's office.
