STAFFORD TOWNSHIP - A 2-year-old girl has drowned after wandering off and falling into an in-ground pool.

Authorities in Ocean County say the death in Stafford Township appears to be a very tragic accident

Ocean County Prosecutor Al Della Fave says the girl was being watched by grandparents at a home on Buccaneer Lane just before 4:30 p.m.

When officers arrived they found the victim being given CPR by an uncle just inside the front of the residence, according to Fave.

Neighbors like Joe Clappsy say they saw the police response as relatives and responders tried to revive the girl without success.

Clappsy says he tells his children to be wary. "You just have to watch your kids, it's plain and simple," he says.

There have been several similar incidents already this year. In early June, a Perth Amboy toddler was rescued after falling into a pool.

Fave says 4-foot fencing, alarms and other measures should be considered by any pool owner to prevent another tragedy. "It only takes a minute for a tragedy to occur," he says.

The prosecutor says an investigation is ongoing and the office is waiting on an autopsy report.

Police say the victim did not live in the house.
