MIDDLETOWN - Authorities say two New Jersey state troopers were injured in a minor explosion yesterday afternoon at a Middletown home.
Police and members of the New Jersey State Police's arson and bomb squads were called to Twin Brooks Avenue at around 3 p.m. after receiving reports of an explosion.
The homeowner, Frank Szmaja, 64, was injured in the first of the blasts. No information regarding his condition has been released. The troopers were injured in a second explosion at the home.
State police officials say the troopers drove themselves to Riverview Hospital in Red Bank, where they were treated and released.
Szmaja is being charged with possession of a destructive device, causing or risking widespread injury or damage and disorderly persons offenses.
