NEWARK - Two teenage girls have been shot outside of a high school basketball tournament being held at the Essex County College gymnasium, according to police.

Officials say the shots rang out at around 6:30 p.m.

The college has been hosting the tournament while students there are on winter break.  Tonight's game was between Shabazz and East Side High schools.

Police say one of the girls was shot in the shoulder, the other was shot in the calf. The girls are in stable condition at UMDNJ, according to police.

A large crowd of more than 1,000 spectators were watching the game.

Police say the gunman escaped from the scene.
