NEWARK - Two suspects have been injured, one of them critically, after a shootout with an off-duty corrections officer in Newark.
According to Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray, the officer was visiting friends in the area of Pomona Avenue and Bergen Street when two armed, masked men approached him at around 2:30 a.m. on Monday.
Police say the suspects fired shots and the officer returned fire, shooting two of the men.

One suspect has been identified as Kyle Cross, 19, of Newark and is in critical condition. The other suspect is a 16-year-old male who is in stable condition.
The two suspects are under police guard at University Hospital in Newark.
The officer involved was treated for trauma and released from the hospital.
Police say the men are believed to have intended to rob the officer.
