EDISON - Two New Jersey public colleges have been warned that they need to correct problems if they want to retain their accreditation.

Kean University and Essex County College reportedly received the warnings last month from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Both were cited for failing to adequately measure student progress and for not having adequate systems to gauge institutional effectiveness. Both have until March 1 to show they've corrected the problems.

AP wire services contributed to this report.
