NEWARK - Investigators say two fatal shootings that occurred in Newark this weekend do not appear to be related.

The first occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the 100 block of Irving Street.

Essex County prosecutors say officers responding to reports of shots fired found two men. Both were taken to hospitals, but 27-year-old Miguel Lopez Jr., of Elizabeth, was pronounced dead a short time later.

The second man remains hospitalized in stable condition. Prosecutors wouldn't release his name, citing security reasons.

The second shooting occurred around 10:30 a.m. Sunday in the area of Cypress Street.

Officers responding to reports of shots fired found a wounded man who was taken to a hospital. But he died there a short time later.

The man's name was not released, pending notification of relatives.
