2 men rescued by Coast Guard, passing fishing charter after boat capsizes 8 miles off Brielle

EDISON - Crew members aboard a Brielle-based fishing boat joined the U.S. Coast Guard to help rescue two men whose vessel had capsized in the Atlantic Ocean.

Witnesses on the Jamaica II charter boat noticed the men clinging to life rings about eight miles off the coast Monday morning. Coast Guard officials say the victims' 31-foot vessel overturned in rough seas at around 8 a.m.

Deckhands worked to remove one of the victims from the water while the other was aided by a Coast Guard boat that had responded to the victims' distress call.

One witness, David Liscio, says both men appeared hypothermic and lethargic. He says when crews lowered a ladder down to bring them up, they were unable to use their arms and legs effectively.

The men have not been identified, but are expected to recover.
