JERSEY CITY - Two police officers in Hudson County were recognized Tuesday for taking nearly 100 firearms off the streets.

Partners Gabriel Moreano and Christopher Viera were named police officers of the year in Jersey City.

In addition to the confiscated weapons, the officers also rescued a person from a burning building.

Jersey City Public Safety Director James Shea says the Valor Awards are important to the officers' morale. "Somebody notices the brave or the excellent work that they do and gives them an award for it,” he says. β€œIt's representative of what they do each and every day when they're out there on patrol.”

The best of Jersey City's police department are recognized for their service in the Valor Awards ceremony each year. Twenty others also received awards or citations.
