PASSAIC - Two firefighters have been injured in a fire that ripped through an apartment building in Passaic.

Officials say the two firefighters were taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson. Their conditions weren't immediately known.

The multialarm fire started just before 9 p.m. Wednesday at the apartment building on Gregory Avenue.

Residents in the building were quickly evacuated by emergency crews.

Large, bright flames could be seen coming out of the fourth and fifth floors of the building. Crowds gathered to watch the firefighters work, but were told by police to keep their distance.

Fire departments from several surrounding towns were called in to help fight the blaze.

There was no immediate word of any injuries to residents of the building.
