2 dead in separate shootings in Newark

At least two people were killed in shootings in Newark between Saturday night and Sunday.

NEWARK - At least two people were killed in shootings in Newark between Saturday night and Sunday.

The first happened at around 9 p.m. Saturday night on Central Avenue. The Essex County prosecutor says 28-year-old Hassan Chatmon was shot in a parking lot. He was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A few hours later, at around 2 a.m., there was gunfire on Irvine Turner Boulevard. Police say 25-year-old Ernest Matthews was shot in the 200-block.

So far, there are no suspects or motives in either case.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating both shootings, along with Newark police.
