PATERSON - Officials say an early morning accident has left two people dead and two more seriously injured.

Investigators say that a car smashed into utility pole at Haledon Avenue and North First Street in Paterson at around 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Firefighters were on the scene to extricate the car's four passengers, two of whom were declared dead. Police have identified the victims as 33-year-old DeShawn Moore and 27-year-old Eric Lewis, both from Paterson.

Nearby residents say they are not surprised to hear that an accident happened. They say the intersection is at the base of a hill, and cars are often seen speeding down the block.

Paterson police are continuing their investigation, and are also trying to determine whether Friday's slippery road conditions were a factor in the crash.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims.
