JERSEY CITY - Authorities have made an arrest nearly 72 hours after a Jersey City man was shot and killed in his front yard.

The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office says 19-year-olds Joshua Higgins, of Newark, and Donte Gaskin, of Irvington, face charges related to the crime.

George Smith, 63, was walking into his Danforth Avenue home with his wife after an evening out. Detectives say two men tried to grab the wife's purse, and Smith tried to fight them off and grab it back when he was shot.

Neighbors say they heard two pops and rushed outside only to see Smith lying on the ground with a a gunshot wound. The gunmen got away by car.

Joshua Higgins has been charged with felony murder. Gaskin so far faces a charge of receiving stolen property, because he allegedly had a cellphone belonging to Smith's wife.

Police say they were able to obtain surveillance video from a gas station across the street. More charges could be filed and more arrests could be made.

The men are expected to be arraigned Thursday.
