NEWARK - Federal authorities have charged 19 people in connection with an international car theft ring based in New Jersey.

According to U.S. Attorney Gil Childers, the car thieves would steal high-end cars like Lexuses and BMWs in New Jersey. Another party would buy the stolen cars, while false identification documents were created. The cars were then shipped overseas to countries in Africa from ports in Newark and Elizabeth.

Police are trying to determine if the car theft ring is connected to one that was busted last week in New York City.
