NEWARK - Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a student near a Newark high school.

Newark Public Schools says a shooting happened between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. near Weequahic High School. An 18-year-old student who had just checked himself out of school was shot as he walked home.

The high school senior was killed in what police are calling a drive-by shooting on Aldine Street. Witnesses told police a vehicle pulled up to him, the shooter stepped out, fired and returned to the car. Police have not provided a description of the vehicle that left the scene.

Investigators have not released any information on a suspect or motive in the shooting.
